Is Ecuador safe?
Quito is the largest city in Ecuador and attracts many tourists. It is generally safe, though be on the lookout for pickpockets. We recommend that you keep valuable items in your front pockets especially when you are in crowded places. Also, although Quito is safe during the day, we recommend not walking through the city alone at night. Additionally, although Quito is safe, rates of violence are rising in other parts of Ecuador, especially along the coast and in more rural areas. Should you wish to travel to other parts of Ecuador before or after the wedding, we have provided a list of safe, high-quality tours under the “Tours” section of this website. If you are thinking about traveling to another part of the country, please contact Caro and Philip for questions about safety or other issues.”
How do I avoid "altitude sickness"?
If you struggle with high altitudes, we recommend that you arrive 48 hours before the wedding and avoid drinking alcohol or exercising excessively during your first 24 hours in Quito.
We recommend that all guests stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water. If you are still suffering from altitude sickness, we recommend taking 1-2 aspirin pills or drinking “mareol.” (Mareol is a sweetened hot tea which calms the stomach. It can be found at any pharmacy and is available without a prescription.)
What is the altitude of Quito?
Quito is 2,850 meters above sea level.

City of Quito
Where the wedding will take place…
Quito, the capital of Ecuador, was founded in the 16th century on the ruins of an Inca city and stands at an altitude of 2,850 m. Despite the 1917 earthquake, the city has the best-preserved, least altered historic centre in Latin America. The monasteries of San Francisco and Santo Domingo, and the Church and Jesuit College of La Compañía, with their rich interiors, are pure examples of the ‘Baroque school of Quito’, which is a fusion of Spanish, Italian, Moorish, Flemish and indigenous art.
